Undoubtedly the most distressing side effect of chemotherapy treatment is hair loss. The stigma of cancer chemotherapy is well documented and patients have been known to refuse treatment in fear of losing their hair - it is the most visible sign of cancer.
Hair loss can however be reduced or prevented through the use of scalp cooling, resulting in improved quality of life; patients’ self-esteem is retained, which helps in fighting the disease. Positive attitudes lead to positive outcomes and potential cure.
"Patient acceptability is high; the system is easily portable and does not require the use of large cooling cupboards or fridges - a great advantage when the chemotherapy clinic is busy." (J Richard C Sainsbury MD, FRCS Consultant Surgeon) |
